Organisational setting
Caritas Africa is one of the seven regions of the Caritas Internationalis Confederation. It is an International Non-Profit Charity Organisation dedicated to the service of the poor and the promotion of charity and integral human development. Caritas Africa is at the heart of the Church’s mission of serving the poor in Africa by promoting integral human development through charity and social justice activities. It regroups 46 national member organisations in Sub-Saharan Africa, which reach more than 73 million constituencies/ beneficiaries across the continent.
One of the strategic priorities of Caritas Africa is Human Mobility, which includes the issues of migration, displacement & refugees, and human trafficking. In this context, a study was commissioned to establish the state of play of human mobility in Sub-Saharan Africa; including key trends (e.g. policies, flows, routes, demographics, vulnerabilities, modalities) and an analysis of project, advocacy and information needs.
To support the data collection and analysis for this study, Caritas Africa will recruit for a short-term a research intern who will be working under direct supervision of the Regional Advisor for Human Mobility, and under the overall management of the Africa Regional Coordinator.
Tasks & responsibilities
The research intern will be responsible for the following duties :
Carry out a literature review on “children on the move” in Africa
Produce an overview of regional and national migrant protection policies (e.g. access to services, violence against women, detention, etc.), as well as protection mechanisms for trafficking victims, with a focus on children
Contribute to data entry and analysis of qualitative and quantitative questionnaires on human mobility
Support to the overall work on Human Mobility (including drafting, background research, translations, etc..). Administrative tasks will be kept to a minimum.
Skills required
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship, although previous work or internship as research assistant, analyst, or information management officer is an asset;
Current or recent graduate in international law, human rights affairs, international relations, social sciences, African studies, international development, humanitarian affairs, or related fields;
Knowledge of migration ,displacement and/or trafficking issues is required;
Strong understanding of research methodologies, in particular open sources is required;
Experience carrying out basic legal research would be an advantage;
Excellent verbal and written skills in both French and English is required; Caritas Africa being trilingual, additional knowledge of Portuguese would be an asset;
Strong organisational skills, attention to details, and ability to work independently and think outside the box are essential;
Experience living and working abroad and in multicultural environments is an asset.
Working conditions
The internship will be based in the Caritas Africa Regional Secretariat in Lomé, Togo. The internship is full-time and office-based.
The expected length of the internship is 3 months.
This is an UNPAID internship. The intern will be responsible for all costs endured during the internship. He/she can benefit from Caritas Africa’s advice in budgeting, getting the visa, finding accommodation etc…
